{burlap coffee sack tote}

A couple days ago my hubby brought these home for me from a local coffee shop...

Woohoo!!!  These are so cool - they're from all around the world - Malawi, Costa Rica, India, Africa...  There are so many things I can do with these...but my first thought was a tote bag.  :)  I have a slight obsession with purses, tote bags, etc...really any container-type thing in general - anything that can hold something...boxes, trunks, vases, glassware, baskets, organizing bins...you get the picture!!  ;)

So I set out to make my tote bag.  I've mentioned this before - I'm really not a sewer.  I sort of just make things up or read sewing tutorials...which leads to a LOT of trial and error!  This bag was one of those trial and error times...I lined the bag in a weird way - I had a reason why I did it that way, but I don't even remember why now!!  Next time I'll line the bag the "normal" way and I think it will look much better.  I also have some other ideas of how to change it next time, but for now, here is the finished tote (approx. 12" x 14"):

It's not perfect, but it works!  This was a pretty dirty coffee sack, so not sure how much I'll actually use this tote...but it's still cool and it gave me some good practice!   I'll be sharing more projects with the coffee sacks as I get them made!

Anyone else used burlap coffee sacks before?  What did you make?  I'd love to see your projects or hear your ideas!  Leave me a comment with your idea or a link to your project!

  1. It looks pretty fantastic to me. I'm hoping that it still smells like coffee beans. That would be sweet. Coffee breath = terrible. Coffee aroma = swoon!

    BTW, I featured your spring wreath in a roundup I did today.
